Young Tamer loves the Nile, whistles its songs and dreams of it at night. In class he answers Herodotus: Egypt is not only the gift of the Nile but 'the gift of the Egyptians' who tamed it. The story corrects the myth of the 'Bride of the Nile', recalls the ancient Wafa' al-Nil flood festival and the oath Egyptians took never to pollute the river, and follows Tamer through dreams where he fights waste of water, litter and pollution. On waking, he pledges to be one of the 'friends of the water of the Nile'.
