إذا احترقت بغداد

حين غزا المغول بغداد، هربت امرأة عراقية منها إلى دمشق، وحكت حكايتها لأهل دمشق لتحذرهم من أن الخطر قادم. فقالوا إن ما يحدث في بغداد لن يصيبهم، لأن بغداد بعيدة. ولما سمعت المرأة العراقية أن المغول في طريقهم إلى دمشق ليغزوها، هربت إلى القاهرة. والتقتها امرأة مصرية في القاهرة الفاطمية قرب الجامع الأزهر، فاستمعت إلى حكايتها وتعاطفت معها، وأخذتها إلى بيتها، وأعطتها غرفتين تسكن فيهما. واستقرت المرأة العراقية، وراحت تحكي حكايتها لكل من تلقاه، وتحاول أن تشرح لمن يسمعها أن مصر في خطر، وتحثُّهم على الاستعداد لقتال الغزاة المغول القادمين في الطريق. فسمعت منهم ما سمعته من أهل دمشق: القاهرة بعيدة.

وفجأة، ذات يوم، شبَّت النار في إحدى غرفتي المرأة العراقية. فأسرع كل من رأى النار لنجدتها. فوقفت على الباب وقالت: دعوا غرفتيَّ تحترقان. وحاولوا أن يزيحوها من طريقهم، قائلين إن النار ستمتد وتصيب البيوت الأخرى. فطلبت منهم أن يعيدوا هذا القول مرة بعد مرة، ثم تنحَّت عن الباب لتدعهم يطفئون النار. وفي أثناء ذلك ظلت تردد: إذا احترقت بغداد فإن شرارة من نارها ستشعل دمشق، وإذا احترقت دمشق فإن نارها ستدمر القاهرة. وبلغت هذه الكلمات حاكم مصر يومئذ، ففهم الرسالة، وقاد الجيش المصري إلى مرج دابق، وانتصر على المغول.

An Iraqi woman escaped from Baghdad to Damascus when the Mongols invaded Baghdad. She told the story to the people of Damascus to warn them that the danger is coming. They said that what happens in Baghdad will not affect them because Baghdad is far away. Hearing that the Mongols are on their way to Damascus to invade it, the Iraqi woman escaped to Cairo. An Egyptian woman who met her in Fatimid Cairo near Al-Azhar mosque listened to her story and sympathized with her. She took her home and gave her two rooms to live in. The Iraqi woman settles down and starts telling her story to everyone she meets. She tries to explain to those who listen that Egypt is in danger and urges them to be prepared to fight the Mongol invaders who are on their way. She hears from them the same thing she heard from the people of Damascus: Cairo is far away.

All of a sudden, one day a fire started in one of the Iraqi woman’s rooms. Everyone who saw the fire came quickly to help. She stood at the doorway and said: Let my rooms burn. They tried to push her out of the way, telling her that the fire will spread and affect the other houses. She asked them to repeat this over and over. She then moved from the doorway to allow them to extinguish the fire. In the meantime she kept repeating: if Baghdad burns, one of its flames will set Damascus on fire, and if Damascus burns, its flames will destroy Cairo. These words reached the Egyptian ruler at the time. He understood the message and led the Egyptian army to Marj Dabek and conquered the Mongols.
