Sindbad Meets King Kong

السندباد يقابل كينج كونج · 2002

The “eighth voyage” that The Arabian Nights never told, published by the General Egyptian Book Organization in 2002 in its New Voyages of Writers series. Abdeltawab Youssef sees Sindbad the Sailor and Sindbad the Land Man as two sides of the same coin. He sends them together to an island ruled by King Kong, and at the end leaves the reader facing a mirror. Here are his opening words on the tale and its closing pages, from the English version prepared for his earlier website.

This is my Sindbad. In him, Sindbad the Land Man and Sindbad the Sailor unite. The fact is that they are two faces of the same coin. The first is tied to the ground with heavy chains, while the other is an adventurer living in the world of the imagination.

Now, what will my Sindbad be like?

He is an Arab who is on a journey to acquire self-knowledge. He engages in wars for just causes. His goal is to learn and teach. In so doing, he delves deep into the depths of the human soul.

What is funny is that when I narrated this story to my friend Sindbad the Land Man, he looked at me in disbelief and said,

“I do not believe you.”

When I retold the story he asked,

“Did I accompany you?”

“Of course, you did. You were with me every step of the way.”

“Strange! But thank God, you are the only one who remembers this adventure!”

“But I was not alone.”

“You must have been daydreaming, or it could be your imagination that has taken you on this astounding voyage that surpassed all your previous seven voyages!”

“I am quite sure that by telling such stories we can conquer evil and fear.”

All of a sudden, I looked for Sindbad the Land Man everywhere around me, but I did not find him. I only found my reflection in the mirror in front of me.
